Who is your Person? Who is your Thelma to your Louise? Who is your Lobster? I am not looking to get personal here, I am talking about in your business. No-one can do SUCCESS alone. We all need a Yin to your Yang, a sounding board, or trusted confidant. But what does that look like? Times have changed dramatically since the 1850’s… well no duh Dave its 2023 so yes it is safe to say things have changed on a multitude of levels, good, great, and not always for the better. The written word, a well-crafted letter, & cherished relationships what does that look like for you? In my recent reading of Team of Rivals written by Doris Kearns Goodwin, I was really moved by the personal and professional relationships at play around the 1860 Election. Lincolns Rivals and Cabinet, William H. Seward, a U.S. senator from New York; Salmon P. Chase, the governor of Ohio; and Edward Bates, a prominent state legislator from Missouri, they each had prominent people they truly loved and respected and who they could not have gotten to the highest level of business and politics without. As the young men of the time left home and the comforts of their small communities, traveling to seek personal growth and employment in distant cities or territories, they often felt unbearably lonely. In absence of parents and siblings, they turned to each other for support, sharing thoughts and emotions so completely that their intimate friendships developed the qualities of passionate romances….Doris Kearns Goodwin Literally downright expressed Love of another person outside of a romantic relationship. It was a different time, long travels, fewer people in your circle, dramatic events surround you and time was fleeting and short, much different then today. But that dramatic value in RELATIONSHIPS really jumped off the pages for me. Such intimate male attachments, that these men had with each other and those in the immediate circle were according to Goodwin, were “a common feature for the social landscape” of the 19th century Do I have that in my life? Should I? What does it look like. Love of a fellow associate, for their, mind and support is beyond true respect, yet our world went and got itself in a big damn hurry, and this but be a mere anomaly in today’s world. Should we have it and can we find it for ourselves. With that I feel relationships have suffered, sure we fall in love, have love of family and friends…but do you allow yourself or can you be love with an associate and confidant who helps you develop in your personal and professional life? Is your Team Leader that person? Do you have a Coach? Who is your Person?
