Happy Tuesday, In the world of business, the ability to influence others begins with an often-overlooked prerequisite: gaining control over one’s own mindset. Achieving a conscious understanding of where you currently stand is no simple feat. As Mel Robbins advocates with the “5 Second Rule,” it involves a cerebral approach to taking action. This method, counting down from 5 to 1, is more than just a trick to get out of bed; it’s a gateway to moving forward in life and business, regardless of where you find yourself on the journey. Many of us are at different stages—some are just starting, while others might feel trapped in mediocrity or find themselves repeatedly hitting what’s known as the “glass ceiling.” This metaphorical barrier represents a point where progress seems to halt, leaving individuals questioning their next steps. Should they seek coaching, counseling, or perhaps collaboration? The answers to these questions are vast and varied, found in books, artificial intelligence, Google searches, mentors, and coaches. Yet, amidst these resources, the most challenging task often lies in decision-making. We spend considerable time learning how to influence others, yet not enough understanding how to influence ourselves. What motivates us? What drives our actions? Identifying your “Big Why” is crucial, and while it often revolves around family for many, there must be something more. Motivations and influences are as diverse as we are individuals—not everyone is driven by financial success, the allure of travel, or material possessions. So, what motivates you? Who influences you? These are significant questions, as the answers directly impact your business. Being a business owner comes with its set of challenges, including finding the motivation to tackle daily tasks. Sometimes, the fear of not accomplishing what needs to be done can be a powerful motivator. But beyond fear, there’s the strategy of how to accomplish these tasks, which often involves surrounding yourself with the right people, evaluating and building a strong team, and constantly searching for talent. However, relying solely on others for success is a misstep. Mastery over the tasks at hand is crucial before seeking someone to take your place. This isn’t about control but understanding—the realization that while you are capable of doing much, your potential is not limitless. Seeking shortcuts by replacing yourself prematurely or without proper business structure can lead to unmet goals. As we approach the end of the third quarter, take a moment to reflect on your goals. Write them down, engage in meaningful conversations with those who matter, and seek inspiration from thought leaders like Phil Jones, Mel Robbins, Tony Robbins, and others who have made significant strides in their fields. Remember, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. This calls for a deep introspection: Are you surrounded by individuals who inspire you, or is it time to reevaluate your circle? Taking action and refusing to settle for mediocrity is the essence of influence, starting with influencing yourself. Embrace the challenge, find your motivation, and surround yourself with those who elevate you. The path to business success is paved with self-awareness, determination, and the right influences. Don’t just aspire to make a living; aspire to make a difference.
