Happy Tuesday:
Struggle & Concern abounds in the current real estate market for business owners at every level of production. How do you handle it? How do your people handle it, and how is it playing out in your organization? Are you aware of how your people are feeling? The manifestation of office aggression may surprise you when you realize that it exists. Often triggered by factors such as market conditions, economic downturns, lack of business profits, and high levels of stress and panic, this behavior can arise even in the most stable environments. Those who display aggressive tendencies can be leaders and respected members of the organization. They might use their position, power, or influence in ways that come across as intimidating, belittling, or controlling to colleagues. This conduct can manifest in various forms, including verbal abuse, manipulation, exclusion, and undermining others’ work. Office hostility can significantly impact the morale, productivity, and overall well-being of employees. Individuals who exhibit these traits can be found at any level within an organization, from entry-level positions to senior management. The presence of such behavior creates a challenging environment, leading to increased stress and anxiety among employees, decreased productivity and creativity, and high turnover rates as employees leave to escape the negativity. Additionally, team cohesion and collaboration suffer, making it harder for the organization to achieve its goals. Moreover, the combination of hostile and scheming traits can surface and erode the work environment. Hostile actions, such as openly aggressive outbursts or passive-aggressive remarks, directly attack the emotional well-being of colleagues. Meanwhile, scheming behaviors, such as strategic manipulation or covert undermining of others’ efforts, create an atmosphere of mistrust and suspicion. These actions degrade the immediate working conditions and establish a culture where negative tactics become normalized, exacerbating issues and making it increasingly difficult to restore a healthy and collaborative environment. Self-reflection is crucial in understanding whether your behavior might be perceived as aggressive. Ask yourself: Do I frequently criticize or belittle colleagues in public? Do I exclude certain team members from important meetings or information? Do I use my position to intimidate or control others? These questions can help you assess if your actions are contributing to a negative work environment. It is important to recognize that office aggression may not always be a deliberate behavior. Often, this aggression is an inherent trait in people who lean into these tendencies. Additionally, shifting business processes and stress can bring this aggression to the forefront. Passion for your work is essential, but it can become problematic when it disrespects others’ contributions and opinions, becomes an obsession that blinds you to others’ needs and feelings, or translates into aggressive or domineering behavior. Being obstinate about your beliefs and disregarding others’ perspectives can turn passion into aggression. It is vital to listen actively and consider different viewpoints, foster an environment of mutual respect and collaboration, and recognize that respect is earned through consistent, respectful conduct. Recognizing and addressing these behaviors promptly is crucial for maintaining a productive and positive workplace. By acknowledging the potential for both hostile and scheming behaviors to emerge under stressful conditions, organizations can take proactive steps to mitigate these tendencies and cultivate a healthier, more supportive work environment.
