Happy Tuesday, “Would you like to play a game?” I hope you recognize that line from War Games. In the movie, a simple, scribbled password grants access to a military system—a classic but all-too-real reminder of sloppy security habits. Here’s the thing: those habits haven’t gone away. I’ve worked with agents who still write their passwords in pencil on their keyboards or tape sticky notes with credentials right to their laptops. Are you that person? In today’s world, security is paramount. I learned that lesson firsthand back in 2007 when I started seeing my likeness pop up online. At first, I was cautious, but as time passed, I got lazy, opting for convenience over security. That’s a mistake I don’t want you to make. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a straightforward but essential step. It requires something you know (a password) and something you have (like a security key or your phone) or something you are (biometric data). Using MFA adds a significant layer of security that makes it much harder for hackers to gain access to sensitive information. When it comes to passwords, not all are created equal. Many still rely on the traditional strong password, but a passphrase is often a better choice. Here’s why: Passphrase vs Strong Password Example Strong Password: `P@ssw0rd!123`
A mix of characters—hard to guess, but tough to remember.
Passphrase: `SunsetBicyclesRideAlongBeach!`
A longer series of words—easy to recall, strong protection.
Keeping up with dozens of unique passwords can feel impossible. That’s why I’m a big advocate for password managers—tools that safely store and generate complex passwords, so you only need to remember one master passphrase. It’s like a vault for your credentials, keeping things secure and simple. Hackers are constantly on the hunt for weaknesses. They exploit sloppy habits—like writing down passwords or using overly simple ones. Real estate agents hold a wealth of sensitive data: client information, Social Security numbers, bank details, birthdates. All of that makes you a prime target if you’re not careful. Just a few months ago, I experienced a hack—$400 gone from my checking account due to a PayPal password reset I missed. It’s a hard reminder: never connect sensitive accounts to a debit card; use a credit card instead for better protection. Even the strongest passwords won’t save you from phishing scams. I get countless phishing emails—sneaky attempts to trick you into giving up sensitive info. Always take a moment to verify links and sources before you click. Trust your gut—if it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Real estate professionals, take a hard look at your security protocols. Do you change passwords regularly? Are they strong enough? Do you rely on MFA? Educate your team on these best practices—security isn’t just about your habits, but theirs as well. Use a password manager to securely share credentials without compromising sensitive data. Cybersecurity is about common sense and consistency. The steps may seem small, but they make a huge difference when it comes to protecting your clients and your reputation. It’s not enough to have strong passwords; you have to keep them up to date. Think of it as changing the locks on your house—do it every few months, or anytime there’s a hint of trouble. For more resources, I’m including guidelines from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) below. Take a serious look at them. Security isn’t just a necessity—it’s your responsibility. ddd ____________________________________________________________________________________ Command Security: https://answers.kw.com/hc/en-us/articles/18031120315411-Password-and-Account-Best-Practices CISA: https://www.cisa.gov/cybersecurity-awareness-month NIST: https://www.auditboard.com/blog/nist-password-guidelines/ ____________________________________________________________________________________ Would you like to talk about what changes you might make in your business through utilizing the leverage of KW Command for your business?
